What the coastal check looks at
- Flooding from the sea. Auckland Council maps the land a storm tide with a 1% chance each year would flood, today and with 50 cm, 1 m and 2 m of sea-level rise.
- Coastal erosion. The council maps land that could be affected by the sea wearing away beaches, banks and cliffs by 2050, 2080 and 2130.
- Sea-level forecasts. NZ SeaRise forecasts how much the sea will rise at points every 2 km around the coast, including whether the land itself is sinking.
- Tsunami zones. The evacuation zones from Auckland Emergency Management.
Why sinking land matters
Parts of New Zealand’s coast are slowly sinking, by a few millimetres a year. Where the land sinks, the sea rises faster relative to it. NZ SeaRise was the first programme to map this around the whole coast, and its forecasts include it.

How much will the sea rise in Auckland?
NZ SeaRise forecasts roughly 25–35 cm by 2050 and 65–90 cm by 2100 around Auckland, compared with 2005, on a middle emissions path. It varies by place, mainly because of land movement. The check shows the forecast for the nearest stretch of coast.
Will I be able to insure a coastal home?
Most coastal homes can still be insured, but insurers increasingly price each property by its own risk. Get a quote before you buy.
